This project was vividly therapeutic for me. A few months before this shoot I went through a period where every creative project I booked would end up not working out. It was WILD, dude! Cancellations, inclement weather, illness- all of the above. Mercury was SURELY in retrograde. Anyways, I was able to pull myself out of whatever diabolical vortex had sucked me in and the results are the photos from this editorial.
When Rachel and Erin agreed to collaborate I absolutely refused to accept anything from ruining this shoot. It sounds silly…but I’m dead serious. I wanted this project to have an aura of fun and carefree energy. Similar to the energy that Harry Styles gives off, yano? I think Harry Styles is probably a pretty important person in pop culture history. I mean don’t get me wrong…nothing he’s doing is completely groundbreaking but right now he takes up his own unique space in the world and I admire that. While concepting for this editorial I heard the song Daylight by Harry Styles for the first time. I immediately loved it. I don’t know how to describe it, but I feel like I could SEE the song. It looked like bright colors, and sunlight. It looked like fun makeup and denim. In hindsight, the styling of this shoot is reflective of how it felt while creating this shoot. In other words, what influenced the styling of this editorial was equally as much Harry Styles as it was the shoot itself.
(does that make sense or is it just Friday at 1:38am?)
Anyways, I wanted both looks to have the same vibe while being noticeably different from each other. The cross necklace from the first set is an obvious nod to Harry Styles, while the denim overalls from the second set are unclipped on one shoulder to make the look more dynamic and suggestive. From the first set I chose to wear the Salt Murphy jeans with the cutout hips because I like to include at least one “shocking” or “weird” styling detail in every look that I put together. From the second set I added the troll dolls. If you look closely, the trolls are wearing chunky knit sweaters (to compliment the crochet cardigan from the first set) with fun shapes that match the designs on my nails.
